Psychology

Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. It includes the study of unconscious and conscious phenomena, together with thought and feeling. The subject covers an enormous scope. Psychologists look to understand the emergent properties of the brain, and the range of phenomena linked to those properties, joining this way the broader neuroscientific group of researchers. As a science, the objective is to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases.

While psychological knowledge is utilized in the assessment and treatment of mental health issues, it is also used for understanding and solving problems in several areas of human activity. In general, psychology ultimately aims to benefit society. Many psychologists are involved in therapeutic roles, practicing in counseling, clinical, or education settings. Many conduct scientific research on a variety of subjects linked to mental behavior and processes, typically working in university psychology departments or academic settings such as medical schools or hospitals, etc. Some are employed in industrial and organizational environments or other areas, including human development and aging, sports health, the media, forensic investigation, and other aspects of the law.

The mission of the Psychology program is to provide students a deeper understanding of the scientific study of Psychology and related behavior, to develop critical thinking skills, to assist in the development of written and oral communication skills, and to guide students in their understanding of ethics. The program prepares majors to enter graduate school in psychology or related fields, to enter professional training programs, or to obtain employment in a wide variety of areas in which they can apply the knowledge, research experience, and analytical skills learned in their major or minor. The Psychology program provides majors both a breadth of expertise in a wide range of fields within the discipline of Psychology and depth of knowledge within areas of interest to the student.
