Resident Assistant Training
R.A training is an integral and continued part of the program. The R.A Training began on Sunday 19th August, 2007 when the eager R.A’s returned to campus for a welcome back dinner. For approximately two weeks, the R.A’s met twice a day for training. During the training sessions, the R.A’s studied their training booklet, explored their responsibilities, and learned important life skills such as understand different people and culture, basic counseling skills, the value of confidentially, self-confidence and learned how to assist dorm residents with various situations. Also, much time was dedicated to planning and preparing for the arrival of students and the beginning of the new semester. The R.A’s also gained their certification in CPR and First Aid. Much emphasis during the training period was placed on the R.A’s having fun, as well as bonding as a team.
A highlight of the training was the Ropes Course that the R.A’s took part in. Through the Ropes Course which took place outdoors off of the campus, the R.A’s were challenged to complete specific tasks with the goal of growing both as an individual and as a team. Through the activities the individual and team explore important life lessons such as leadership, communication, problem-solving, encouragement, as well as overcoming one’s fear, and empathy.
