TurnItIn is an online service that compares a student’s submitted writing with published articles and every previously submitted paper to determine whether a paper contains plagiarized information. The result of the analysis gives a score of 0 to 100 (a relative indication of how much of the paper appears to be plagiarized). You want a score that is at or close to 0. The analysis shows which passages are identical or too close to text found in the original articles or previously submitted student papers.

When papers are required in a course, the syllabus or the assignment sheet will state whether to submit the paper to TurnItIn and whether the results are part of the final grade on the paper or are used as a pre-check so the student can edit or correct the paper before submitting it to the instructor.
